Erica and her up and coming entourage.

I recently came across a wonderful article about our producer Erica Harrell. She is an incredibly motivated and sucessful up and coming player in the industry and we are proud to have her efforts and achievement recognized. Here is an excerpt:

“It sounds like the kind of leap a sideline client being managed by Eric Murphy (a.k.a. E) in the shadows of Vincent Chase’s travails might suddenly make on an episode of the acclaimed HBO series Entourage. But in this case, the ascendant individual is Erica Harrell, a real-life production secretary on the show.

Harrell is executive producing not one but two independent films pegged for release in 2009. And though both the Western The Attic Door and the thriller Acts of Mercy showcase for the most part relative unknowns, the former is notable for having been shot on location in and around Kanab, Utah, an area known back in the 1930’s as “Little Hollywood”.”

Who are the Angels of Death?.

When I was doing my research for Acts of Mercy, I ran across a great article about women that kill in the healthcare profession. In it, Dr. Katherine Ramsland (the author), describes the complex psychological motivations for killing in the nursing profession. Ramsland also gives a detailed account of the known cases in which nurses have crossed the line from caregivers to life takers. You can read the full article here.

These profiles always send chills down my spine. In a time when assisted suicide and pain management are trying to take a spotlight, we get to see the dangerous extremes of those who we are supposed to trust the most.

How It All Began.

Erica Harrell

Producer

Laura and I met sometime in 2004 when we were both undergrad students at the University of Central Florida. I became the producer for two wonderful directors at UCF, Solange Morales and Debby Wolfe.  Laura was friends with Debby and Solange and therefore became my friend as well. Debby’s film “Cat’s Bad Hair Day” went on to play at the 2005 Tribeca Film Festival and the 2005 Hampton’s International Film Festival while Solange’s film “No Boots on the Bed” is making the festival rounds now.

Unfortunately I did not produce Laura’s UCF capstone short film, but I always wanted to work with her. After graduation Laura moved to Los Angeles and pursued many different areas of the film and television industry. (She will have to blog about those adventures as I can’t even begin to describe her time in LA) When I was looking to move to Los Angeles, it was Laura who warmly offered up space in her tiny studio apartment for me to stay in while I searched for an apartment.

Shortly after I moved to LA, Laura pitched me an idea for a script that she had that involved a young nurse being mentored by an older nurse. This idea became the backbone for the script of “Baker”. Back in 2005, I made it one of my goals to produce Laura’s feature film and now three years later we have “Acts of Mercy.”

Through out my short career it has been awesome working with people who are my friends as well as my business partners. I hope to continue making movies with Laura and I am honored to have her as my good friend.

A look into our past….

I just came across the link of this online piece while browsing on our old, now defunct website. It’s a wonderful article written by critic Roger Moore about our movie before we actually made it, (back when it was called Baker, name that I loved but got me into too way many conversations about my love of pastries).

Here’s the blurb:

“Tovah Feldshuh, the actress and acting teacher who made Golda Meir come to life on the stage, one of the star’s of TV’s legendary series Holocaust, with a recurring role on Law & Order and appearances in everything from Kissing Jessica Stein to Just My Luck and A Walk on the Moon, is making a movie under Valencia Community College’s film production program (with UCF talent behind the camera, too.).

It’s called Baker and starts shooting in the next few weeks. They’re shooting mostly in Pine Hills.

These films are low-budget indies in which Valencia provides much of the gear and the sweat equity (student interns in every tech dept.) giving indie filmmakers HUGE bang for their buck. If it’s a script that attracted Feldshuh (she played Kate Hepburn in a terrific TV movie about Howard Hughes starring Tommy Lee Jones in the 70s), it must be good…”

Thank you for stopping in to check out the blog for our film “Acts of Mercy.” This has been a film that Laura and I have been working on for nearly three years and we are really proud of the final product. This blog for me will be a look back on our production as well as insights and updates on what is happening with the movie now.

Well, Acts of Mercy is currently being submitted to film festivals around the world. We are working on getting this site up and running and beginning our marketing campaign.

Please check back often and if you have any questions comments or concerns please feel free to email me at eharrell@ambrosiafilms.com

Director vs Website.

So…after many failed attempts I have somewhat figured out this website stuff.
Let me introduce myself, this is Acts of Mercy’s director Laura C. Lopez.
I have been working on Acts of Mercy (my first film) for the last four years. I have been fortunate enough to have a wonderful team working with me. You will meet them soon.
We will be posting our journey while making the film, and the challenges we face as an independent feature in the current festival and film market.
More to come soon!
